Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery

Brand Positioning, Tone of Voice & Website Copywriting

The Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery was set up by the team who run the award-winning Wold Top brewery in East Yorkshire. Made with malted barley they grow on their farm, along with spring water from their own borehole, it is driven by the spirit of the area.

I explored several narrative territories, based on the story behind the distillery. It was important to position SOY as more than just the first Yorkshire whisky. This led to the idea of ‘The Instinctive Spirit’, based on their inquisitive and experimental approach. From this, I developed brand and tone of voice guidelines, which were then used as the starting point to write the website and various launch communications, including leaflets and press releases for the trade and public launch of the distillery. The distillery’s first single malt, Filey Bay, was launched in October 2019.
